Survey II. (Political)

Please answer the following questions:

1) Do the American people understand the implications of war (innocent death, torture, geopolitical change (such as shifting global opinion), etc.)?

2) What are the motivations for America's invasion of Arab countries, and how do these motivations compare to the motivations purported by the American government?

1) Clearly, they have no clue. I see bumperstickers everyday with witty little slogans like "Freedom isn't free." People have no sense of history. They do not realize that there will always be someone making the case that war is necessary/inevitable. Now, does that mean we have to believe this? No, but it makes me question the whole process of human thought. Think about Europe. They were opposed to the war vehemently. Why do you think that is? Well, in the last 100 years their continent has been utterly descimated by war. It has effected their lives. They have lost millions. We have no idea. We live isolated far away from any fighting. In the last hundred years, how many american civilians have been killed as a result of war? Very few. Three thousand die and we decide to go on a rampage. So, I think in general, Americans believe war is necessary and good because it is so removed from us.

2) Our war on the Arab world is simply a reaction to 9/11. That's it. There is no deeper meaning for anyone except those who have given it meaning after the fact. Bush wanted to invade Iraq and the terrorists gave him the golden ticket. It is abhorent to us that civilians could die on our land without anyone being held responsible (Even though every other country in the world is subject to this, often at the bloodied hands of American bombs). Think about it; the backlash against anyone who resembled the highjackers has been SO strong as to prompt us to invade not one, but two countries. Which is ironic considering that was arguably Saddam's biggest transgression, internationally speaking. But Bush and his cronies knew that they could sell this war. It has always been easy to sell a war where you kill people that live on the other side of the world and who are completely different from you. The facade of spreading democracy makes me want to vomit. But it is a rationale for the war that most Americans bought. Even though support is wanning, that will not bring back the 10000 Iraqi civilians that we have already killed.
